This Berry Cherry Chia Seed Jam is by no means a traditional jam. This is a real food jam. A healthy, tasty jam you will want to smother on everything.
I can already tell this will be the first of many chia seed jams. Can you imagine a jam that’s refined sugar-free, that actually tastes like fruit and is really easy to make? This is what I’m handing you with this Berry Cherry Chia Seed Jam recipe.
Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches used to be a family favourite before embarking on a healthier lifestyle but once you start reading food labels there is no way you will continue to eat store-bought jam.

Banana bread smothered in homemade almond butter and berry cherry chia seed jam.
I wanted to try my hand at jam making but a quick google search discouraged me. Pectin and sugar required – tons of sugar. Really ?? No thanks! This is by no means a traditional jam. This is a real food jam. A healthy, tasty jam you will want to smother on everything.
Berry Cherry Chia Seed Jam Ingredients
All you need is fruit, fresh or frozen will do, chia seeds, a liquid sweetener like maple syrup or honey and homemade vanilla extract
Chia seeds are the star of this recipe. If you know nothing of these seeds just know they are magical. Chock-full of Omega 3’s and fibre. They can absorb liquid ten times their weight and that makes them the perfect binder.
Use chia seeds to make a chia fresca, to thicken stews, soups, puddings and for this Chia Seed Jam.
You will find chia seeds in white and black
. There is no significant nutritional difference between the two.

This jam is heavenly. Once refrigerated it will keep for two weeks but it wont last that long. My family enjoys it on toast, crackers, in smoothies, as a topping on our favourite porridge and pancakes. Lately my favourite post workout snack is almond butter and Berry Cherry Chia Seed jam on a rice cake.

This jam freezes beautifully for 3 months in the freezer. You may freeze just the pureed fruit then when you’re ready to eat defrost and add chia seeds and sweetener.

Hey Krystal, this is a lovely blog! Can’t wait to try this jam out 🙂 Do you think if I used just the 1 and 1/2 cup strawberries, it would be ok? Reducing the chia seeds and honey of course 🙂
Thank you Gayatri! Yes I’ve made it with just strawberries. The only difference will be the colour of the jam. It’s the cherries that really give it that gorgeous merlot red hue..:)

Hi Krystal,
This sounds great and I love the idea of putting chia seeds in the jam – adds protein and lot of important nutrient. I can’t eat strawberries but I sure can make it for my husband since he loves strawberry jam. So I will save your recipe for when the strawberries come in season in our area. Thanks for sharing on Real Food Fridays. Pinned & twitted.

Could this jam be frozen?
Hi Bailey, good question! I have frozen just the fruit with great success. For instance now strawberries are coming into season, so cook I them, make half the batch into jam and freeze the other. I later defrost the fruit and warm it through on the stove adding the chia and honey to taste. I have never frozen it as a ‘complete’ jam if that makes sense?
Great article. Thanks for sharing this.
