These DIY Baking Soda Air Fresheners are super easy to make using common kitchen ingredients. They are just what you need if you suffer from allergies or you’re trying to avoid the chemicals and synthetics in commercial air fresheners! Aren’t they cute?

I am not going to make any false claims here. These Baking Soda Air Fresheners smell NOTHING like store bought air fresheners, but do you know why?
They’re all natural!
Commercial air-fresheners are filled with toxic chemicals that can lead to a vast array of health issues especially for those who suffer from allergies. Besides that they never seem to actually get rid of odors. Instead odors are masked by an overpowering synthetic sweet smell which I personally find nauseating.
Pretty meets functional
Last summer we renovated the bathrooms in our home. After the renovations were complete I began the search for pretty accessories to complement each bathroom. I searched many home shops for a ‘natural’ lavender air freshener but came up blank.
Eventually I gave up.
It wasn’t until one day when I went to replace the jar of baking soda that I keep in my fridge as a deodorizer that it occurred to me that this easy, natural solution could also work in rooms. By neutralizing acids and bases, baking soda just seems to magically suck up odors.
The only problem was that a plain jar of baking soda wasn’t gonna cut it in my new ‘fancy’ bathroom so I got to work with some burlap and pretty ribbon .
Here’s how you can make those cute little DIY Air Fresheners for your home too.
How to make Air Freshener with Baking Soda
You will need:
- A glass jar (sterilized food jars or mason jars)
- Baking soda
- 1 tablespoon of the following per jar (dried lavender flowers ,cinnamon, dried orange peel)
- Essential oils
- A breathable piece of fabric like burlap or muslin and pretty ribbon.
Directions:
- Fill your jar halfway with baking soda.
- Add herbs and 5 -10 drops of essential oil to the baking soda.
- Mix with a fork to distribute the essential oils and herbs.
- Cover the jar with fabric and tie with pretty ribbon.
Advice
Add a couple drops of essential oil to the underside of the fabric to help intensify the smell.

What is the best way to make your house smell good?
The smell from these homemade air fresheners will never be as strong as commercial scented plug-ins but the room is left smelling fresh and odor free!
If you would like a more intense smell I highly recommend an Aromatherapy Essential Oil Diffuser . All you need to do is add a couple drops of your favourite essential oils or blends to your diffuser and the room will be filled with a scent of your choice.
3 simple air freshener recipes for every room of the house
1) Lavender Scent
You will need:
- Baking soda
- Lavender Essential Oil
- Lavender flower buds

2) Lemon Scent
You will need:
- Baking soda
- Lemon Essential Oil
- Lemon zest
When my little princess saw what I had created for the bathrooms she insisted I make one for her room. I had her go through my essential oils to choose a scent and to my surprise she chose lemon.

3) Sweet Orange & Cinnamon Scent
You will need:
- Baking soda
- Organic Sweet Orange Essential Oil
- Cinnamon stick
- Orange zest
I was on a roll, so I also created an air freshener for the home office with sweet orange and cinnamon. This is my favourite by far. The spicy sweet smell (and really good music) helps keep this food blogger motivated.. 🙂

Further Uses for your Homemade Air Freshener
These DIY Air Fresheners are environmentally friendly and super easy to make and as a bonus they can also be used as a carpet deodorizer.
Simply sprinkle the mixture over your carpets and vacuum it up. I’ve found these awesome decorative mason jar lids which would turn them into a perfect shaker. They come in a wide variety of colors.
I am going to order some along with a few mason jars to make these DIY Air Fresheners as gifts.

Hi Mila, are you able to buy from Amazon? I have included a link in the post for the burlap. If not a local fabric store may have. Let me know how you get on!
Hi!!! My teammate over at Etsy sells burlap. She has a call for all “burlap and twine addicts.”
Here is a link to her shop 🙂

Wondering where you bought the cute little bottles to put the baking soda in?
Hi LaVonne the little bottles are recycled tomato sauce jars.
Lovely natural air freshener recipes; very practical solution to avoiding toxic ingredients. Thanks for this.
Very glad you like it 🙂
Definitely going to try this! How long does the scent last? When it has gone do you need to start from scratch with fresh soda or can you just stir in some more oil to keep the same jar going?
Hi Claire, the scent is not very strong at all but even after it fades the baking soda does do an excellent job of sucking up bad odors. You can refresh the jar with a couple drops of EO every couple weeks and make a fresh batch monthly. It really depends I play it by air.
Thank you!
Love these! What size is the jar?
Hi Betty, the jars are recycled tomato sauce jars, they’re 160g each.
Hi, I loved the jars. Can you please tell me which brand’s tomato sauce it is?
Thanks.
Hello Palak I live in Spain. The tomato sauce is a local supermarket brand. I can’t even remember the name and I don’t have any in my pantry at the moment sorry.
What kind of dri herbs do you use to put in the baking soda and oils for air fresh?
Hi Lillian, I use dried lavender flowers for the lavender air freshener .
Wonderful idea! I’m trying to do all natural for my husband’s allergies! Thanks!
That’s great Nancy!
Do you need to put the herbs in? Also is there another substitute for burlap?
Hi Caitlyn yes you need to put the herbs in. Any breathable fabric like muslin or cheesecloth would also work.
Greetings Krystal, I created something similar with dried peppermint leaves from my garden last year. Put the leaves into a small basket and placed in bathroom. In winter the steam from our shower released the aroma. Helped with sinus.
Love this idea! Keep up the healthy work
Oh that sounds fab Katrika! Whenever my little one has a cold I place some dried peppermint leaves, eucalyptus, lavender buds and chamomile flowers into a bowl of hot water. The aroma from the steam really helps to clear her stuffy nose and calm her. Isn’t it wonderful to have such natural remedies 🙂
Krystal, I know this is not a new post, but I just found it, needing something pleasant for my sister’s hospital room. Thank you for this lovely and easy way to freshen the room and brighten the surroundings. This is a blessing for my sister and me.
Thank you for taking time out to leave such a lovely comment. Wishing you all the best!
I’m really excited by this idea. I’m going to try it and then make some for Christmas gifts! Thanks so much for the great idea!
I’m just wondering if this would work with fragrance oil rather than essential oil?
I’m sure it would work but keep in mind that fragrance oils are VERY different to essential oils in their composition. Fragrance oils are artificially manufactured oils made from synthetic compounds whereas essential oils are extracted from different parts of a plant, such as flowers, herbs, or roots.
Amazing idea, how long do they last before you have to cast aside or freshen up? Many thanks
Hi Sheryl, there is no set time as it entirely depends on the size of the room and other factors. You decide when its time 🙂
Perfect idea. Thanks for sharing!
