This hibiscus face mask is 100% real food nourishment for your skin. It gently cleanses and exfoliates leaving your skin moisturized and rejuvenated!

I’m pleased to share with you this hibiscus mask recipe my daughter and I created to celebrate Mother’s Day.
How to make hibiscus face mask
Ingredients
You will need just 4 basic ingredients but just in case you don’t have some of these handy I will offer ideas for appropriate substitutions:
- hibiscus powder – no sub here sorry, this is a hibiscus face mask after all 😉
- brown rice flour – pink or white kaolin clay, oat flour or finely ground oats would make a great sub
- aloe vera gel – honey would probably work
- yogurt – full fat coconut milk is amazing
The method
Step 1 ) You’re going to make a dry mask
- Combine the two dry ingredients – hibiscus powder and brown rice flour. Store this dry mix in a glass jar and it will keep for a very long time.
Step 2 ) When you’re ready to use your hibiscus face mask
- Remove 2 teaspoons of the dry mix (brown rice+hibiscus powder) to a small bowl or plate and add just enough yogurt and aloe vera gel to form a thick paste. You can start with 1/4 teaspoon of each.
- Spread over your face.
- Let dry for 10 – 15 minutes before rinsing with warm water.
We do it this way because as soon as you add the (real food) wet ingredients to the mask it is prone to spoilage. So you want to make only as much as you will need and toss any remaining.
Why make your own Hibiscus Face Mask
- contains naturally occurring acids which help to purify your skin by breaking down dead skin and increasing cell turnover, they can even help to control acne breakouts.
- has astringent and anti-inflammatory properties that help treat redness and inflammation from eczema and other skin conditions.
- increases skin elasticity to give a stunning natural youth-boost
- actively combats the ageing process by firming and lifting your skin
- is rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants are proven to help fight skin damaging free radicals.
As for the ingredients
- is rich in vitamins and essential fatty acids great for renewing and moisturizing skin.
- the selenium present in brown rice helps to maintain skin elasticity and reduce skin inflammation.
- excellent emollient properties for moisturizing dry skin.
- has anti-inflammatory properties which help reduce acne greatly.
When I was growing up we had an aloe vera plant in our backyard. As a teenager I suffered with acne. My mom would slice the aloe plant open and scoop out the gel. I would then apply this directly to my skin. It worked wonders to relieve my symptoms.
100% Grass-Fed, Organic, Plain Yogurt
- contains lactic acid, a natural hydroxyl-acid which helps exfoliate and hydrate skin. Lactic acid also helps prevent pre-mature skin ageing.
- contains zinc, which helps lighten blemishes and scars and helps prevent redness of the skin.
- helps to absorb excess oil and makes your skin feel tighter and smoother.
Yogurt is one of my go to foods for nourishing skin and hair care!
In today’s world it seems like we’re all trying to find the ‘magic bullet’ that delays the natural ageing process. Put an anti-ageing label on almost any product and it seems to fly off the shelves!
But the secret to a gorgeous, glowing complexion doesn’t lie in super expensive beauty products. A healthy outside starts on the inside. That means you must get to work on your diet and lifestyle.
Here are my top tips for true beauty that shines from the inside out.
- Maintain healthy eating habits: Eat a ton of fruits and vegetables. Berries and leafy green vegetables are especially rich in antioxidants and additional potentially age deterring compounds.
- Hydrate adequately: Anti-ageing skin care can’t be any simpler than this. Water helps to flush out toxins from the body, making it less prone to disease.
- Beat stress: Stress throws your hormones out of whack and accelerates the ageing process. Sleep, meditation and exercise, are all good ways of beating stress.
- Supplement with collagen: As we age collagen (the protein produced by our cells that helps hold the skin together) production slows. This can result in saggy skin and wrinkles.
- Use natural organic skin care products: Avoid the use of strong, chemical based products on your skin.

I think this is my favorite post this week 🙂 Love it! So sweet! And I have some hibiscus just waiting to be used for this! Thank you!
Thank you Renee. If you make it I want to see your hibiscus covered face ok.. 😉 🙂
I saw the video you had on Facebook for this post, and just loved it. So cute!!
I used to love making face masks when I was a kid, too. I still do, but have gotten out of the habit.
Sadly, I think that my little never-wants-to-get-his-skin-messy son probably won’t play spa day with me, so maybe I’ll have to try it out myself!
Happy belated Mother’s Day, by the way. 🙂
Thank you Tracy. Your son sounds a lot like my hubby whom I call ‘Mr Clean’.. lol You should definitely try it on yourself.. 🙂

Thanks Tash! We also love hibiscus around here.. 🙂
This looks gorgeous! Like dessert!
Oh yesss!! My daughter did have a taste of the leftovers.. 😉
I would love to do this with my daughters, but one is allergic to dairy products. Do you have a recommendation for a substitute for the yogurt?
Hi Jennifer to achieve the same consistency I would just add more aloe vera gel and a touch of water or perhaps rose water if you can get it.
Hi Krystal,
I am assuming that it is the flower of the hibiscus that is ground down to a powder. Is that correct?
Thanks so much!
Stephanie
Yes it is Stephanie 🙂
How much of each do you use? It doesn’t specify the amounts for the yogurt or aloe Vera gel. And what is Dry Mask? Is that a powder? I have never heard of that. Thanks! 🙂
Hi Crystal, the dry mask is the dry ingredients: brown rice flour + ground hibiscus. As it states in the recipe section. Combine the dry ingredients and store until ready to use. This can be stored for an almost indefinite time. When you’re ready to make your mask remove 2 teaspoons of the dry mask (dry ingredients) to a small bowl or plate and add just enough yogurt and aloe vera gel to form a thick paste. You can start with 1/4 teaspoon of each.
Does it stink because tried it with water and its stinks a little like applying cinnamon on the face.
It has a lovely floral smell . Do you mean STING? If it stings then your skin probably has some little cuts on it.
Hey Krystal, I actually got two hibiscus flowers from my aunt’s place.. I’m gonna try this right away
Excellent!
Hi Krystal ! I love this hibiscus facemask so much. But when i using it, my skin got itchy. Do you have any recommendation to solve the problem ?
Hi Nisa, if your skin itches with the mask on I suggest you do not use it. You may potentially be allergic to one of the ingredients.
How often should a hibiscis face mask be done or can i do it everyday since ita plant base….
Hi Krystal! I found this face mask recipe and I absolute made it! I did a bit of changes because I didn’t have brown rice, so I used whit rice flour and it was AMAZING! Now I’m going to do it for the second time but this time I’m going to add a bit of raw honey because I am a huge fan of DIY face masks, specially when are super healthy for the skin! Thank you for share this recipe with all of us!
That’s wonderful Luisa! Honey is a great addition if it works for your skin type ?
Is this mask done everyday
Darlene you may use this mask as often as you see the need.
