Hot Chocolate For Cold Nights…
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! But baby it’s cold outside…. Sometimes I feel so bad complaining about the ‘cold’ weather here in Spain when it rarely goes below zero but the major problem is that Spanish houses are built for the summer not winter.
Our building for example has no insulation and no central heating, so we have to bundle up, sip copious amounts of tea and hot chocolate.
Lately, I started making hot chocolate so often that I decided to make my own instant hot chocolate mix.
Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix Ingredients
Because this homemade hot chocolate mix is only 3 ingredients you absolutely need to make sure you get the best quality you can afford.
Below I’m going to highlight each ingredient and give recommendations for sourcing quality brands.

Ingredient #1 – Raw Cacao
Organic raw cacao powder is a good source of antioxidants, magnesium and iron
What is the best cocoa powder for hot chocolate?
Look for brands with minimum ingredients. Ideally the only ingredient should be raw cocoa and it should not contain added sugars and milk fats or oils.
Recommended Cocoa powder brands available on Amazon.
- Green & Blacks Organic Cocoa Powder
- Viva Naturals Certified Organic Cacao Powder
- Wild Foods Organic Cocoa Powder
Ingredient #2 – Coconut Palm Sugar
Coconut Palm Sugar is the boiled and dehydrated sap of the coconut palm. I wouldn’t consider a superfood but coconut sugar does offer more vitamins and minerals than white table sugar.
Ingredient #3 – Pink Himalayan Salt
Pink Himalayan salt contains 84 natural elements and minerals including magnesium, potassium, calcium, chloride, phosphorus and iron. The salt’s pink color is a result of a tiny amount of iron oxide (rust). Zinc, selenium, iodine and copper are also present in trace quantities. Most importantly pink himalayan salt contains all these minerals without chemical processing or refinement.
Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix Ratio
I’ve used a one to one ratio of cacao to coconut sugar in this mix. Through experimenting I’ve found I like this ratio best but feel free to do a bit of experimenting.

Thank you for sharing this on Savoring Saturdays.
Cheers!
Thanks for sharing Shreyashi!
I’m a teacher and work in a school that is always cold, so I like to keep hot drinks around. I HATE all the chemicals in store bought mix, so this is a perfect solution. Thank you so much for the recipe!
I feel your pain Michelle. Here’s to warmer days thanks to delicious hot chocolate 🙂
I’ve totally been into making my own hot cocoa mixes lately. So much tastier than those little store-bought packets! And, of course, healthier. 😉 Thanks so much for sharing this at Savoring Saturdays, Krystal! We’re getting the party started back up this weekend – I hope to see you there! 🙂
Thanks Raia! You can count on my participation.. 🙂
I love this Krystal! I am featuring it on Savoring Saturdays this weekend. I can’t wait to see what you share this week!
This looks amazing! Do you just mix it with hot water and add the coco mix to taste?
Hi Jessica, I usually add a tablespoon of the mix to a cup of steaming milk ?
While looking for a better option than my usual real cocoa and sugar hot chocolate mix I found yours. I never thought of the coconut sugar and I happen to have some in the cabinet. This will be a much better alternative for my more health conscious kids than I!
That’s awesome! I hope they enjoy this healthy homemade hot chocolate as much as we do 🙂
